Charles Nutting Design Section

When I first graduated high school, my first "real" job was as a Draftsman for a company called Mogul. I chose that profession because I liked drawing, but at the time being an artist was a bad idea. The job market was pretty dry when it came to an art career.

Since then I have worked my way into a web development career. Though I love my job, I really do not get the chance to be creative anymore. Yea sure, programming wise I find many creative ways to make things do what I want or need them to do. But that is not the same as putting the color to the canvas and making something beautiful.

In the past year I have set a goal for myself to do more creative things. Either it's designing a website layout, creating landscapes, or just designing an image composite for an advertisement.

The following Photoshop projects are the steps I have taken to improve my design skills, and have fun in the process.

Most of these projects can be found at tuts+. Another great site to learn more about digital graphic design is Ctrl+Paint.

I hope you find these helpful.

Typographic Portrait

Typographic Portrait

In this tutorial I took a photo of a very pretty girl and re-created her image using type. This tutorial will teach you how to use a mask to filter out text based on the midtones of an image. You also will apply 2 gradients to change the color of the type used. This one was really fun to do!

Car Chase Scene

Car Chase Scene

In this tutorial I created a car chase scene where a Ford Mustang is running from a Dodge Charger police car. The tutorial is quite different from what I decided to do, and the tutorial is really bad. But you will learn how to do motion blur, lens flares, and other masking tricks.

Misty Morning Scenery

Misty Morning Scenery

In this tutorial you will create a morning scene pf the sun coming up. The instructions are not that good, so you will have to improvise like I did. Still was a quick and fun project.

Typography Poster

Typography Poster

In this tutorial you will learn how to create an amazing Typography Poster in Photoshop. I decided to take this one to another level, and used an image of me that I created for RPG games I play. Also decided to not include all the text, really didn't like the layout.

Chilling Photo Composite

Chilling Photo Manipulation

In this tutorial you will created a fantasy photo manipulation called "You Can Not Frost The Time" using several Photoshop tools such as Color Range, different blending modes, and more.

Elegant Book Poster

Elegant Book Poster

In this tutorial you will learn how to use layering, blending modes, and basic composition. Instead of using Photoshop I used Gimp to create this.

Coffee Addict Site

Coffee Addict Site

This design uses a wood grain finish, with a spot of coffee stain. If you like coffee, here is a good starting place.

Colorful Site

Colorful Site

This is an alternate design for this site. It uses 3 defused background colors, scrolling hero banner, and a feature section.

Elegant Blog Site

Elegant Blog Site

This design is simple and a great starting place to learn web design. This design seems to be the "Bootstrap" look most sites are using in WordPress.

App Landing Page

App Landing Page

An application landing page is used to get the user interested in purchasing your application. It doesn't have the header or footer navigations.

Train Grunge Site

Train Grunge Site

This site has a grunge look, and focuses on trains. I stayed with the lesson to a point, but changed some of the coloring and layout.

Realistic Landscape From Scratch

Realistic Landscape From Scratch

This is a landscape painting in Photoshop CS3 from scratch. Using layers and the smug tool you can do amazing things.

Nature Inspired Background

Nature Inspired Background

In this painting we use layers again for each level of the painting. I also used some custom brushes for the trees, clouds, and the final grunge texture

Mountain Landscape

Mountain Landscape

This time we are using masks, gradients, and layers to create the levels of mountains and clouds.

Welcome to charlesnutting.net

I'm going to be up front here about charlesnutting.net, this site is in no way connected to me selling a book I wrote, plastering the pages with ads to click on, or in no way making me any money.

The whole purpose of this site is to show people things I love to do, display my photography skills (or lack of), and experiment with new web technologies.

It’s also a place for me to jump on my soapbox and rant about the way the programming world is changing. In my Blog there are programming tips on coding JavaScript, and soon other langauges.

Enjoy!
